Our 2013– 2014 concert series


 “East Meets West”


A triumphant season begins as your LA Winds plan their invitational tour of China. Scheduled to perform in 6 Cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, your LA Winds will preview their China concerts as well as presenting an exciting array of contemporary and classic wind band literature.

While the Pierce Performing Arts Building remains under construction, your LA Symphonic Winds will be performing even closer to home next season in the brand new Performing Arts Education Center of Calabasas High School.  This magnificent theatre will provide us with a beautiful sonic environment as well as convenient parking and easy access.

Join MaestroStephen Piazza & members of the LA Winds plus the Pierce Jazz Band, acclaimed soprano Cathryn Tortell, world renowned saxophone virtuoso Dale Underwood and members of the LA Opera Orchestra

Subscription Concert 1 – “Gawdzilla Revisited”
He’s Back!!! Our season opening concert includes Eric Whitacre’s highly acclaimed and innovative Sin City spoof “Gawdzilla Eats Las Vegas”, a celebration of Morton Gould’s centennial with a performance of his evocative “Santa Fe Saga”, plus the acclaimed Pierce Jazz Band.

Subscription  Concert 2- “China Tour Preview”
Our program will include Alfred Reed’s Spanish-inspired tone poem “El Camino Real”, James Barnes’s virtuosic “Fantasy Variations” and John Williams dazzling “Star Wars” medley in a preview of some of the works we’ll perform during our 6 concert tour of China.

Subscription Concert 3 --“China Preview II and Holiday Sing Along” 

Join the LA Winds and virtuoso saxophone soloist Dale Underwood in exciting arrangements of selections from “West Side Story” and unforgettable melodies by George Gershwin.  J.S. Bach’s monumental “Toccata and Fugue in d minor” will also be featured along with our traditional holiday sing along and post concert reception.

Subscription Concert 4 -- “ChamberFest – a Chamber Music Celebration”

Join select members of the LA Winds for a truly up-close and personal musical experience in the informal settings of the Music Department’s two rehearsal halls.  Join Maestro Piazza as he leads members of the LA Winds in Serenades by Mozart and Strauss while LA Winds members display their talents in a festive afternoon of intimate music making.

Subscription Concert 5- “European Masters and Brass Masterworks”

An eclectic program of wind band music featuring the LA Winds and members of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra in music by Schumann, Dukas, Donizetti and other European masters.  The finale to Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony brings this classic concert to a rousing conclusion.

Subscription Concert 6 – “A Celebration of American Composers”
David Maslanka’s moving “Traveler”, Frank Ticheli’s powerful “Apollo Unchained” plus the enchanting soprano stylings of Cathryn Tortell are featured along with many of your traditional patriotic favorites.

“Sunset Dinner Serenade” (For all subscribers except $50 level 1st time subscribers)
Our annual season ending event ushers in the summer with an enjoyable evening of light classics, Broadway hits and patriotic marches.  Great food, fine wine and great music!!
